Everyone Was The Best of Show! LYS Day Rocked!

As we approached International LYS Day excitement mounted as our customers dropped off entries for the Best of Show contest. Entries consist of items crocheted or knitted with yarn purchased at Three Crows Fiber. Every entry was amazing! Each visitor to Three Crows Fiber on April 25 received three tickets to cast votes.

At the end of day, when the votes were counted, Lisa C's crochet animal blanket won the most votes. There are several things the voters may not have known about this item and its fiber artisan:

  • Lisa C began crocheting shortly after the shop opened in September 2024, taking classes with Nicole. This reveals how far a person can progress in a short period of time. In only a few months, Lisa created a piece that won best of show! Education is a goal of our shop.
  • Lisa C did not work in isolation. She attended many Sit & Stitch sessions with Nicole and other knitters and crocheters. She asked questions, shared frustrations and got encouragement within community. Community is important to success and is also a Three Crows goal.
  • Lisa C admitted to feeling awkward when getting started. Her feelings were respected, and as her knowledge and experience grew, so did her love of crochet.  Learning happens by doing.
  • Lisa C crocheted this with LOVE for a grandchild! Handmade items given (and received) by loved ones are the best gifts.

A fun fact about this Best of Show item:  It had been washed three times before it made it to the contest. And it still looked great! This is impressive and shows the power of Queensland Coastal Cotton. Originally, the blanket had a beehive square. Can you guess why it was removed and what replaced it?

The item that received the second most number of votes was a stranded color work sweater knit by Christy B.  It is the first item she has ever knit!(Read that sentence, look at the picture and let that sink in.)  She has years of experience as a crocheter, however, knitting is a new skill. Her sweater was knit with Manos del Uruguay, Sami.

The contest included prizes for the Best Toy and Best Handspun. Unfortunately I did not catch a photo of the adorable white ferret knitted by Kaylan. And Kyla's beautiful handspun yarn spun from Bella Luna Fibers was to die for! Visit Three Crows Fiber's Instagram to see these beauties.

The winners deserve their due, but I can't say enough about the amazing display of skill and talent our folks brought in. Several of the pieces were designed by their makers. Maybe next year we should do a fashion show? Thanks so much for everyone who showed up and participated. It was a truly wonderful day.
